Join acclaimed novelist and writing teacher Alice Mattison to explore the question, “What Does Your Novel Want?”

Whether your incomplete novel has already been through several drafts or consists primarily of notes and a partial scene or two, it may benefit from an afternoon’s conversation with other writers. First we’ll discuss what any piece of fiction wants if it’s to turn into a complete book that we’ll recognize as a novel. After that, we’ll spend our time talking in some detail about the novels each participant is writing, putting our heads together in an effort to help the writer proceed and help each of us learn from one another.

Please come prepared to tell us briefly what you know (so far) about your book: What is the story about? How much time will pass in the lives of your characters from the beginning to the end? As the book proceeds, what will the reader be curious about?

Space is limited and registration is required. Register Online or call (860) 349-9544, ext. 1.

Alice Mattison’s book about writing, The Kite and the String: How to Write with Spontaneity and Control—and Live to Tell the Tale, was published in 2016 and is now available in paperback. Her seventh novel, Conscience, will be out next year. She teaches in the MFA program at Bennington College.
